CVS Pharmacy is one of my favorite kinds of retail outlet: a pharmacy with benefits. While waiting for your prescription, you can stock up on all sorts of random essentials from beer to potato chips.
The CVS.com website offers so much more. Here, you will find everything from aspirin to wheelchairs. Manage prescriptions for your entire family and keep a record of their medication histories online using a handy prescription management tool.

The people behind CVS Pharmacy share a passion for customer service. They are committed to reinventing pharmacy for the better health of their customers. The letters CVS stand for Consumer Value Stores.
1963 - Brothers Sidney and Stanley Goldstein and their business partner, Ralph Hoagland, open the first CVS store in Lowell, Massachusetts, selling health and beauty products.
1967 - First pharmacies start appearing in CVS stores in the State of Rhode Island.
1985 - CVS achieves $1 billion in annual sales.
1999 - CVS.com, the first fully integrated online pharmacy in the United States, is launched.
2007 - Merger of CVS Corporation with Caremark Rx, Inc.
While there are plenty of reviews of CVS on the Internet, it can be a bit tricky to separate comments about the website, CVS.com, from comments about individual stores. Here are a couple I have been able to isolate from Sitejabber.com
Five Stars from Coni H.: CVS.com is one of my favorite shopping websites. They almost always offer free shipping in one way or another & their customer service is outstanding. They ship to APO addresses, & when my husband was in Iraq & Afghanistan, I regularly sent him shipments from CVS.com.
Four Stars from C.N.: I recently ordered from cvs.com a couple of simple things that I needed and couldn't get in Guatemala. It was an easy transaction online and everything came on time and as described.
Five CVS companies are listed on the BBB website, none of which are accredited by the organization. One, CVS Caremark, has a rating of F. The site lists 19 customer reviews, one of which reports a neutral experience; the remaining 18 report negative experiences. My family shop there and we have always had positive experiences.
In terms of complaints, 766 have been closed with BBB in the past three years, 451 of which were closed within the previous 12 months. These are broken down as follows:
- Advertising/sales issues: 105
- Billing/collection issues: 131
- Delivery issues: 59
- Guarantee/warranty issues
- Problems with product/service: 469
The Better Business Bureau reports on any significant government issues they are aware of that concern a business' conduct in the marketplace. Since 2010, three have come to the bureau's attention.
These seemingly dismal results should be viewed with caution. One of the largest pharmacy retail pharmacy chains in the United States, CVS has more than 7,000 stores in 41 states. Its ExtraCare loyalty program has more than 65 million subscribers. Its major competitors are Walgreens and Rite Aid. By comparison, Rite Aid has 4,700 stores and a total of 191 complaints closed with the BBB in the past three years. The distribution of categories of complaint is similar to that of CVS. RiteAid has a BBB rating of A+. For some reason, I was unable to find Walgreens on the BBB website.
Weighing up fairness and honesty and not wishing to demonize the entire company based on a statistically small number of complaints compared to the number of customers, I feel compelled to give CVS.com a 3 out of 5 for business credibility. On the one hand, 65 million people can't be all wrong. On the other hand, Rite Aid managed to eke out an A+ rating with the BBB.
Google Page Rank
CVS.com has a Google Page Rank of 7/10, very good. This is comparable to Walgreens.com, with a GPR of 7/10 but slightly higher than RiteAid.com at 6/10.

As I placed my order for painkillers on the CVS.com website (writing can sometimes give one such a headache!), I spotted the comforting green padlock on the left-hand side of the address bar. This icon appeared on the page where I had entered my name and shipping details. This morphed into a confusing grey padlock icon with a yellow triangle over it. Until I learn more about what this means, I think I'll give the order a miss. I was also unhappy with the shipping times (more on that later).
The Google Safe Browsing report was reassuring. Of the 62 pages tested over the previous 90 days, no disturbing issues were flagged.
Prices for the CVS.com products pictured in this review are compared with their counterparts on the Walgreens and RiteAid websites.
Enteric coated aspirin, 81 mg
- CVS Low Strength Aspirin 81 mg Enteric Tablets, 200 ct = $8.29 (4.1 cents/tablet)
- RiteAid Ecotrin Aspirin, Safety Coated, 81 mg Tablets, 150 ct = $8.99 (6 cents/tablet)
- Walgreens Ecotrin Safety Coated Aspirin Tablets, 81 mg, 365 ct = $14.99 (4.1 cents/tablet)
Pringles Super Stack Potato Crisps, Sour Cream and Onion Flavored
- CVS, 6.38 oz = $2.29
- RiteAid - No comparable product available
- Walgreens, 6.38 oz = $1.89 or 2/$3.00
Slim-Fast Shake Mix - Chocolate Royale, 12.83 oz
- CVS = $8.99
- RiteAid = 8.99
- Walgreens = $8.99
Drive Medical Bobcat 3-Wheeler - Red
- CVS = $799.99
- RiteAid = No comparable product available
- Walgreens = $899.99
I considered ordering a bottle of painkillers for dispatch to an address in California. The shipping charges were almost as much as the product itself:
- Standard 5-10 business days (under 10 lbs): $5.49
- Priority 2-4 business days (again, under 10 lbs): $12.95
As CVS.com ships only within the United States and military APO addresses and not to the United Kingdom, I decided this was too much to pay, too long to wait, and not worth the flight from London.
CVS.com accepts the standard credit cards:
- American Express
This is disappointing. For the online shopper with a PayPal account, it is far easier to click the PP icon and type in their password than it is to dig out their card and type out all the various numbers, dates and security details.
Cvs.com has a no-hassle return policy that allows its customers to return nonprescription purchases to any of its CVS Pharmacy stores in person or in the mail within 30 days of receiving the merchandise. To return products in the mail, call 1-888-607-4CVS (1-888-607-4287).
CVS/pharmacy/Brand products are covered by a 100% guarantee, no questions asked. Merchandise must be returned unopened.
Beauty products are also covered by the 100% guarantee as per above. Again, product must be returned unopened.
